Where did the term "Back Forty" originate?
"Back 40" is a beloved American term used to describe a 40 acre parcel of land, specifically one sixteenth of a section, constituting the smallest unit of agricultural land commonly surveyed. "Back 40" can also refer to an undeveloped plot of land (as on a farm, ranch, etc.) of unspecified size.

In the original Homestead Act of 1862, during the Lincoln Administration, each settler was allocated 160 acres of land; in other words, a quarter-section. The terms "lower 40", "front 40", and "back 40" were used to reference a specific quarter section.

At Vollmer Farm, our Back 40 means FUN for all ages!
